Organization, founded in 1846, had its origin in the Amistad [Schooner] Incident (1839). The Association supported antislavery churches and other activities on the frontier and in the Northern and Southern border states. After 1861, the AMA established hundreds of schools and churches among Freedmen and other ethnic groups. Although originally multi-denominational, it is now part of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries. Collection is overwhelmingly correspondence, elaborately indexed. Larger addendum mostly postdates 1920's.
